WOLFTRAP NATIONAL PARK for the performing arts plays host to a wide selection of artists from all genres…

The complex, which includes indoor and outdoor venues, sits atop a 130-acre lot in the heart of Vienna, and consists of the Filene Center, named after Catherine Filene Shouse, who donated the land to the government in 1966, The Barns at Wolftrap and The Children’s Theater in the Woods. For nearly five decades Wolftrap has been our nation’s first and only national park specifically designed for the performing arts, and is a landmark location for local metro area residents.

The Filene Center is the main venue for touring bands and other visiting acts. With seating for 7000, as well as a large lawn section, the Filene Center is what comes to mind for most of us when we think of Wolftrap. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more tranquil and beautiful setting for a concert. It’s here that over 90 summer shows are performed during the summer months, with visitors either in the indoor and seated area or on the lawn where many bring picnics whilst enjoying their shows.

The Barns at Wolftrap is indoor performance space that seats nearly 400 guests. The land and funds were also donated by Catherine Filene Shouse in 1981, and is where performers such as The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet and Joyce Yang will perform in the coming months. With fantastic acoustics, the Barns and Wolftrap is a perfect venue for classical and ensemble music and is open year round. The Barns at Wolftrap is also where you can catch performances by The Wolftrap Opera Company that is currently performing a great rendition of Sweeney Todd, and The Tales of Hoffmann.

The Children’s Theatre in the Woods performs over 70 shows from June through early August. From 10am to 11:15 am on Tuesdays through Saturdays, you and your family can enjoy a host of wonderful shows amidst a gorgeous shady grove. Performances include music, storytelling, puppetry and theater performances, and is recommended for children in Kindergarten to the 6th grade.

Living in the suburbs of Northern Virginia has its difficulties, traffic being one of the big ones. But we’re also rather lucky. We have at our disposal a one of a kind cultural performance center that is open for us all year round. By visiting Wolftrap, you not only have an amazing time, you also support this unique and important Northern Virginia cultural landmark. Visit wolftrap.org, and see the fall line-up for yourself.
